The R&D Senior Software Engineer is a senior technical leader within the Infectious Disease business unit. This role is responsible for the secure design, implementation, and support of cloud-connected diagnostic platforms. The position requires deep expertise in cloud architecture, cybersecurity, interoperability, and Tier 3 technical support. The role is highly collaborative, working across local and global teams to deliver high-quality, compliant, and innovative solutions.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership to global software teams to deliver secure, scalable cloud solutions.
- Conduct threat modeling, define security requirements, and design secure system architectures.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues escalated from Tier 1 and 2 support.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (R&D, QA, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Commercial) to align product development and support strategies.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, training materials, and best practices.
- Represent Abbott in industry forums and standards bodies related to cybersecurity and interoperability.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (HIPAA, FDA, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304, 21 CFR Part 820).
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and support staff.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (±16 years)
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in software engineering or a master's degree in a related field and 3 years of relevant experience.
- Advanced experience in designing and developing complex software systems.
- Ability to provide guidance to junior team members.
- Advanced knowledge in modern programming languages such as C/C+/C# or Python and agile methodologies.
- Advanced level understanding of test-driven methodologies.
- Advanced level knowledge with continuous integration & continuous development (CI/CD).
- Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, creativity, and independent thought.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to develop & design at the component-level.
- Advanced level understanding of design patterns.
- Strong analytical & problem-solving skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 7 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree in a related field or 5 years of relevant experience with a master's degree in a related field.
- Advanced level ability to conduct thorough data analytics & implement data-driven solutions.
- Experience in the Medical device/diagnostic field.
- Solves complex problems and removes roadblocks for the team.
- Creates a collaborative and respectful team environment.
- Communicates decisions clearly and effectively across departments and geographies.
- Demonstrates strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Works effectively with geographically dispersed teams across time zones.

The base pay for this position is $90,000.00 - $180,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
